Innovation work in interdisciplinary teams

Creative Ideas Development

What is Design Thinking?

Design Thinking is a systematic approach to complex open-ended issues that can be applied in almost all areas of life. In the production environment, for example, it is possible to improve existing products and processes or open up completely new fields of application.

The approach goes far beyond the classic design disciplines like shaping and design addition. In contrast to many approaches in science and practice that tackle the issue of technical solvability, user desires and needs as well as user-oriented inventions are at the center of the design thinking process. Design Thinker look at the question from the user's perspective and thereby take on the role of the user.

Design Thinking takes the human perspective as the starting point for the goal of designing innovative products and services that are not only attractive, but also practicable and marketable.

Success factors

The success of Design is decisively determined by a collective working and thinking culture. This is based on 3 essential elements:

  • interdisciplinary teams
  • variable spaces
  • and the design thinking process.

Design Thinking Process

The design thinking process first creates a deep understanding of the problem for all parties involved, then opens a broad solution space and helps to make the right choice through immediate user feedback. Creativity techniques, haptic, functional prototypes and immediate feedback from potential users characterize this methodology.

Design thinking is a method for the practical, creative resolution of problems using the strategies designers use during the process of designing. Design thinking has also been developed as an approach to resolve issues outside of professional design practice, such as in business and social contexts. The design thinking process has various stages including: defining the problem, researching, forming ideas, prototyping and testing. The steps can occur simultaneously and be repeated.
