What is a digital twin?

A digital twin is a virtual live image of a physical object. It shows the physical characteristics and business context of the real object, for example an installation, from the initial plan to design, construction and production right through to the end of its life cycle.

Such a twin provides real-time information on the configuration, status and status of the system. Historical data can be retrieved via APIs. Digital twins act as virtual proxies, sending alerts and notifications that trigger control flows in the physical world. More complex digital twins map hierarchies or relationships, contain derived data from statistical analysis, machine learning and physical simulations, and provide service functions. Linking digital twins from multiple vendors with different customers creates a trusted network of digital twins.
